How to use this test

1
Prepare for the test

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly, then open the test kit pouch. Remove the test device and place it on a flat surface.

Remove the cap from Bottle 1, and place it on a flat surface. You’ll need this once you’ve taken your blood sample.

2
Collect your blood sample

To collect your blood sample, twist and pull the lancet tip, and then discard the tip.

Massage your finger and hand to increase blood flow. Place the lancet on the side of your finger tip. Rub your finger to create a large drop of blood, and let the drop fall into Bottle 1.

Apply the adhesive bandage to your finger.

3
Apply your sample to the test

Shake Bottle 1 four times. Pour all liquid into the centre of the test device, and wait until all the liquid disappears.

Repeat this process with Bottle 2, and then with Bottle 3. Remember to shake each four times before pouring into the test device.

You may need to gently tap Bottle 2 to release the liquid.

4
Read your result

Once all the liquid has disappeared, immediately read your result.

A single dot under ‘C’ means you’re likely negative.

Two dots suggest you may be HIV positive. Consult with your doctor as soon as possible to confirm your result.

If there are no dots, or only one dot at the bottom of the device, your result is inconclusive. Discard all materials and obtain a new test kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this test recommended for?

This test is for anyone concerned they may have been exposed to the HIV virus.

This may have been through sexual contact or sharing needles with someone who carries the virus, but other points of contact exist. If want some peace of mind, this is the test for you.

Additionally, if you’re pregnant or trying to get pregnant, this test can help you know your HIV status and take preventative measures for your baby, if necessary.

Do I need to send my sample to a lab?

This test is designed for maximum discretion and comfortability. Your results will be instant, and no lab is required to process them.

By following the quick and easy instructions, you’ll get an idea of your HIV status instantly, without the intrusion of lab analysis.

How accurate are the results of this test?

Our HIV home test is extremely accurate, with 100% sensitivity for detecting the presence of HIV in your blood. In a lab trial for this test, 99.8% of known HIV-negative participants tested negative, showing a reliable level of accuracy.

It’s worth noting, however, that no test can be absolutely accurate. If you test positive, please consult your GP as soon as possible.

How exactly does the test work?

The test device itself contains non-hazardous HIV 1 and 2 proteins. When you apply your blood sample to the device, any HIV antibodies in your blood will be captured by the proteins.

Antibodies are produced by your body to battle infection, so if you’ve got HIV antibodies, this suggests you have HIV. If HIV antibodies are in your blood, both dots on the device will be present.

How soon after exposure can this test detect HIV?

Taking this test too soon after potential exposure to HIV runs the risk of a false-negative result. This is because it takes up to 3 months for the body to produce HIV antibodies after infection, depending on the speed of your immune system. For some people, this can be as quick as three weeks, but for maximum certainty, you should wait around 3 months.

Early detection is key to ensuring the best possible health outcomes. By taking this test at least 3 months from infection, you’re maximising your chances of successful treatment and quick recovery if you’re HIV-positive.

What’s the difference between HIV 1 and 2?

HIV 1 and 2 are separate strains of the same virus. HIV-1 is the most common strain, and accounts for most HIV infections globally. HIV-2 is a less common variant which is typically found in West Africa, although cases do exist elsewhere.

Although both types can be transmitted in similar ways, HIV-2 is generally less transmissible and less likely to become AIDS. HIV-1 progresses more quickly, and some people can live with HIV-2 for years without displaying symptoms.

Without proper detection and care, both strains carry similar long-term risks. That’s why it’s so important to take this test as soon as possible after the 3-month waiting period.

Which other factors may influence my result?

As with any test, other lifestyle factors can have an impact on your result. If you’re taking antiretroviral treatment (ART), the detectability of HIV in your blood is affected and so your result may be inaccurate.

If you have an autoimmune disorder, or have been vaccinated recently, your result could be unreliable. Consult a medical professional before taking the test if any of these apply to you.

How do I ensure I’ve collected enough blood?

Ensuring you get a sufficient blood sample is essential for maximising the accuracy of your results. 20 minutes prior to taking the test, drink water and relax. Wash your hands with hot water to heat them up and get the blood flowing, and be sure to dry them.

You can further promote blood flow by keeping your hand below waist level. When you’re ready to collect the sample, choose an area on the side of your finger tip, away from your fingernail, which is smooth and not calloused. This will ensure your blood flows more easily.

I spilled some of the bottle contents. Can I still take the test?

If you accidentally spill some of the contents of any of the three bottles, continue with the test for now. After you’ve applied the sample, the control dot (under ‘C’) tells you whether the test was performed correctly.

If no dot appears, this means you spilled too much of the liquid. You should take another test at this point.

I can’t see any dots. What does this mean?

If nothing appears on your test after applying the sample, hold it under bright lighting to double check.

If you still can’t see any dots, this means you haven’t completed the test correctly or provided a sufficient blood sample. You’ll have to take another test.

I tested positive. What should I do next?

First of all, try not to panic. You don’t yet know for certain whether you’re HIV-positive. You’ll need to book an appointment with your GP and inform them that you’ve tested positive on a home HIV test.

Any positive home test results must be verified by a laboratory test, so your doctor will arrange this.

If your result is confirmed, there are plenty of treatment options available. HIV treatments are highly effective, especially when you catch it early.
