About this test

Brand we're currently stocking: OneStep

This easy-to-use EtG rapid test detects ethyl glucuronide (EtG), a substance your body produces after alcohol is metabolised. EtG can be found in urine even after blood alcohol content (BAC) returns to zero, making this test ideal for identifying alcohol use over the previous few days.

By detecting alcohol metabolites that linger after drinking, this test helps provide insight into recent consumption habits, not just immediate use, making it especially useful for ongoing monitoring or follow-up over time.

Simply collect a small urine sample, dip the test strip, and the results appear in minutes without the need for specialised equipment or lab processing.

With a sensitivity of 300 ng/mL, this test offers a reliable detection threshold that minimises interference from incidental sources of alcohol.

How to use this test

1
Prepare the test & collect a urine sample

Take the test strip out of its foil packaging. Do this only when you're ready to begin testing.Use a clean, disposable plastic cup to gather a fresh urine sample from the person being tested.

2
Dip the strip

Gently place the test strip into the urine sample, making sure not to submerge it beyond the markedMAX LINE. Leave it submerged in the urine for 10 to 15 seconds.

3
Wait for results

Remove the strip from the urine and lay it flat on a clean, dry surface. Allow time for the test lines to develop

4
Read the results
  • Negative results may appear immediately.
  • Positive results should be read after 5 minutes, but not after 10 minutes, to avoid inaccurate readings
5
Interpret the results

When viewing the test strip, two line regions are visible:

  • The Control Line (C): always appears if the test is valid.
  • The Test Line (T): indicates the result.

Negative result

Two pink/red lines appear, one in the control region (C), and one in the test region (T), even if faint. This indicates no detectable EtG; alcohol has not been recently consumed or is below the detection threshold.

6
Interpret the results

Positive result

Only one pink/red line appears in the control region (C); no line appears in the test region (T). This indicates the presence of EtG in the urine, suggesting recent alcohol use.

Invalid result

If no control line (C) appears, the test did not run correctly. Discard and repeat with a new test strip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this rapid alcohol urine test recommended for?

This test is recommended for detecting recent alcohol use and is commonly used in a variety of settings. It’s ideal for supporting sobriety and recovery efforts, workplace testing, legal or compliance monitoring, and personal accountability.

Do I need to send my sample to a lab?

No. This is a fully self-contained urine test that gives results on the spot, no labs or special equipment required.

How sensitive is the test?

The test detects EtG in urine at a threshold of 300 ng/mL. This strikes a balance between identifying recent consumption and avoiding false positives from incidental alcohol exposure.

How soon after drinking will this test detect alcohol in urine?

EtG can be detected in urine for up to 80 hours after alcohol consumption, depending on how much was consumed and individual metabolism.

This timeframe isn't a definite and depends on several factors, including the amount of alcohol consumed (heavier drinking leads to longer detection), and individual metabolism (how quickly a person's body processes and eliminates substances).

What’s the advantage of using an alcohol urine test over a breathalyser?

The advantage of using an alcohol urine test over a breathalyser is its longer detection window. A breathalyser measures current alcohol intoxication (BAC) and typically only detects alcohol for a few hours after consumption, usually while a person is still under the influence.

An EtG urine test, however, detects alcohol metabolites that can remain in the system for up to 2-3 days after alcohol has been consumed, even after the person is no longer impaired.

This makes the EtG test ideal for identifying recent alcohol use or monitoring sobriety, rather than just immediate intoxication.

Can this test be used for workplace or program screening?

Yes. With its ease of use and high accuracy, this test is suitable for employers or other settings requiring alcohol monitoring.

However, employers in the UK should be aware of relevant legislation. Employee consent is generally required for testing, and policies should be clearly outlined. For legally defensible results, especially concerning disciplinary action, a confirmed laboratory test often follows an initial rapid screen.

Is this alcohol urine test accurate?

Yes, this test is CE marked and offers over 99% accuracy when used correctly.

However, procedural errors can affect the results. It's important to follow the instructions precisely to ensure the most reliable outcome.

Can medications, mouthwash, smoking, or food affect the result?

Only substances containing ethanol can influence results. While the test is designed to minimise false positives at its 1,000 ng/mL threshold, it's possible that medications or products with even trace amounts of alcohol could trigger a positive result.

This includes certain cough syrups, cold remedies, or even some mouthwashes and hand sanitisers if used heavily or immediately before the test. Foods like overripe fruits or fermented products (e.g., kombucha, sauerkraut) also contain trace ethanol that could theoretically be detected, though this is less common with higher cut off levels.

It's best to be mindful of all products you consume or use that might contain alcohol, even in small quantities, if testing is a concern.

How should I store the test kits?

Store the test kits in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Proper storage helps maintain the test’s accuracy and reliability until the expiration date.
