Drug Testing FAQs
Which drug tests do UK employers use?
UK employers use urine and saliva drug tests, and some programmes use hair testing. There is no single panel for every workplace. The employer’s policy, job risks and testing purpose determine the sample type and process.
Workplace urine vs saliva drug tests
Urine testing usually detects drug use over a longer period than saliva testing. Saliva collection is easier to observe and often suits screening for more recent use.
Neither sample type proves current impairment. Hair testing can help assess a longer history of use, but it cannot establish that someone is unfit for work at a particular moment.
Which drugs do employers test for?
Panels may include cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and benzodiazepines. Some panels also cover ketamine or methadone. No panel detects every drug.
Employers should explain which substances they will test for and why, obtain consent for screening and protect the results. A larger panel is not automatically a better fit.
Screening, confirmation and sample handling
Some programmes start with an on-site rapid screen; others send samples directly to a laboratory. A non-negative rapid result needs laboratory confirmation before anyone treats it as a confirmed positive.
A documented chain of custody records who collects and handles each sample. Medical review helps assess prescribed medicines and other explanations for a positive result. Ask your employer or testing provider for the exact panel and procedure.
