Drug Testing FAQs

Can I refuse a drug test at work?

Yes. You can refuse a drug test at work, and your employer cannot force you to provide a sample. Refusal can still lead to disciplinary action if the employer has good grounds for testing, so check the relevant policy before deciding.

What does your workplace policy say?

Check your contract and staff handbook for the testing policy. Look for who it covers, when testing can happen, and the stated consequences of refusing.

Signing a policy does not give an employer permission to force a sample from you. It can still affect how they handle a refusal through their disciplinary procedure.

Is random drug testing legal in the UK?

Workplace drug testing can be lawful when the employer has a justified purpose and follows the relevant safeguards. Safety risks may justify testing in roles such as driving or operating machinery.

Random testing is not a blanket right to test everyone. Employers should justify who they include and explain how they select people, collect samples and use the results.

What should you do if you have concerns?

Ask why testing is necessary, which policy applies and how the provider will address any medical or sampling concerns. Raise concerns promptly and keep a record of the response.

For individual advice, contact Acas in Great Britain or the Labour Relations Agency in Northern Ireland. Your union representative or an employment solicitor can also help.

Considering a kit for personal screening?

Check the kit’s intended use before ordering.

Compare the substances covered and intended use of Rezure’s drug testing kits. A personal test does not replace an employer’s formal process. Speak to a union representative or qualified adviser about refusal or disciplinary action.
