Drug Testing FAQs

Are home drug testing kits accurate, and do they actually work?

Yes. Home drug testing kits work as screening tests for the drugs listed on the kit. They can give accurate results when used correctly, but false positives and false negatives are possible. A screening result is not a definitive laboratory finding.

How accurate are home drug tests?

There is no single accuracy figure for every home drug test. Performance varies between kits and between the substances a multi-drug panel checks.

Look for performance data for each drug rather than relying on a single headline percentage. Also check the cut-off: the concentration that triggers a non-negative result.

Why can a result be wrong?

A false positive suggests a drug is present when it is not. Some medicines or other substances can interfere with particular screening tests.

A negative result does not rule out drug use. The drug may be outside the panel, below its cut-off or no longer detectable when the sample is collected.

How to get a dependable result

Follow your kit’s instructions for sample collection and reading time, including the amount of sample required. Check expiry dates and storage conditions before you start. Results read outside the stated time window may be unreliable.

Treat a positive or non-negative screen as preliminary. Arrange laboratory confirmation before making important decisions, and speak to a healthcare professional if the result is unexpected or concerns you.
